In photography, especially nature shots, the subject tends to overbear the actual act of taking the photo. While most people find the best looking bird/flower/lake/mountain and get a decently exposed shot of it, you have done something a little different: captured the motion of the atmosphere. In large part this is thanks to the mists surrounding that awe inspiring waterfall, but there is a subtle balance I think you captured very well. Your shot is not overexposed, allowing a deep shadow to frame the waterfall, but bright enough to create detail in the foliage. I think it is a little heavy on the verdant [green] side, but I don't think that is something you did, just the nature of the location. The timing on your exposure is pretty darn good, speeding it up and we would have lost some of the details in the trees I think. An excellent piece, and I commend your eye [both photographically and artistically].
Your capture of this waterfall caught my eye at the thumbnail image and had to see it larger. I have read ~thecurl's critique and I can agree. I have a waterfall in my area about the same height. I have watched it for years trying to judge the best most representative time to actually save it to film. Your image shows my path to capture mine. Your choice of time of day for lighting the scene and movement of the water falling creating the pattern in the mist is perfect. Exposure is my struggle. You have mastered it here. I guess in my terms, you have taken Ansel Adams ability in B/W and added color. Love the detail. I can hear the roar of the water when I see this image. That is what I think all of us as photographers strive for.
Wow! Thank you so much...I am very touched by your kind words. Thank you so much for taking the time to look at my photo, and commenting on it so thoughtfully
